Jaguar XJ Review by Expert

The sheer class and quality that one expects with the name Jaguar, can be all seen in the XJ saloon with the first model appearing in the year 1968 meaning the heritage has been continuing smooth for the past 45 years. The British marquee rendered this saloon with different engine options marking the different variants of the car. The earlier versions were available with three different engine options and then the saloon was only made available with the V12 engine. Jaguar has introduced a series of changes with XJ and the whole body styling going aluminium with the X350-series XJ. The exteriors of Jaguar XJ are the most confident looking and tell a story of the future with contemporary looks and appearances that comes with elements and aura marking it to the core of being a Jaguar produced vehicle. The looks got modish when the low-slung three-box was altered and the company introduced a longer wheelbase and made use of aluminium body panels and chassis to cut down the flab. With reduced down weight Jaguar XJ is the lightest saloon in its segment and this is a definite advantage in its bag.

This English product comes with unmatching exteriors and do not imitates the looks and appeal of its precursors.  The sheer length of the saloon depicts the spaciousness of the interiors and the waisted plush look with swage line that starts with the top of the wheel arch in the front and then alters at the middle to again reappear at the rear arch. The awe-striking and oh so appealing front fascia is rendered with Bi-function HID Xenon headlamps that turns on automatically sensing the diminishing sun light. The rear lights follow the outlines of the boot and the triangular shape subtly echoes the characteristic design of its precursors. The Sunroof feature in XJ is a full drama with the glass roof sweeping from the windscreen top and going all the way to the beginning of the rear seat area. The sunroof opens upwards and goes outwards that enhances the sense of space in the cabin area. The overall dynamics of Jaguar XJ is marked at 5,247mm X 2110mm X 1,448mm with a wheelbase of 3,157mm. The saloon runs on wider wheels and tyres are fitted at the rear, to optimize grip and accentuating the car’s forward dynamics. The boot volume has increased to 520 liters, a volume that’s now class average and betters that of a BMW 7-series.

When it came to yester years version of this vehicle there was a lot of complaint that even though the car being an epitome of luxury in appearance, the cabin area falls short in space. Now with the increase in the wheelbase, the interior volume and space is increased.  Jaguar has kept a hold of the cockpit-like feel that has a high transmission tunnel like the one seen in airplane and has a close resemblance with XF. In the current version of the vehicle the Jaguar XJ interiors features a rotating gearknob that welcomes you when one revs up the engine of the vehicle. The driver’s seat is fine and comes with a well shaped easy to fall steering wheel with gearshift paddles incorporated to its rear. Ergonomically, this feels and looks like a fine cabin. Most of the surfaces are done in leather and well finished wood like the dashboard and the central console. The digitized dashboard display is all new, refreshed that replaces the conventional, real analogue dials. The display resolution is fab with some neat graphics that you can choose as per your choice. The speed closest to the vehicle’s current velocity is highlighted with the automatic gear change selection shown beautifully and the in the new instrument cluster the left dial is replaced with a small sat-nav map prompt at times. While all these things makes your in-Jaguar XJ experience overwhelming what works on the downside is the  central touch-screen display  which is poorer because of its mediocre resolution and design and the air vents do not match in performance with their class appearance.

Jaguar XJ comes in four guises two petrol and two diesel- Jaguar XJ 5.0L, Jaguar XJ Ultimate, Jaguar XJ 3.0L and Jaguar XJ Ultimate 3.0L, the powertrain remaining same in the normal and Ultimate editions in both fuel options.  The smaller 3.0L diesel powertrain pumps out 275 PS of peak power and develops a maximum torque of 600 Nm. On the other hand the petrol powered 5.0 L V8 AJ V8 GEN III engine pumps out 385 PS of maximum power at 6,500 rpm and an impressive peak torque of 515 Nm at 3,500 rpm. The astonishing handling is commended by six-speed ZF automatic transmission plus the low body kerb weight of the saloon results in high performance.
