Maruti Alto

Price range: Rs 2.40 lakh to Rs 3.39 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi)

Description: Maruti Suzuki India could also be referred to as the gamut for small cars in India; it has a number of hatchbacks in its portfolio ranging from an entry level hatchback to a premium small car. Maruti Alto is one such entry level car that can be seen easily on roads, this is the most reliable and one of the most affordable small car options for those who are thinking to upgrade to a four wheeler. Maruti Alto is available in petrol, and CNG engine options, however lack of a diesel trim does pinch the car maker. The petrol variant is powered with a 0.8 litre petrol motor that churns out a 47 PS at 6200 Rpm and 62 Nm at 3000 Rpm. While the CNG version is also powered with a 0.8 litre CNG mill that pumps out 39.4 PS at 6200 Rpm and 54 Nm at 3800 Rpm. Maruti Alto delivers an excellent fuel economy in city conditions and on highways too. Alto petrol returns 16.5 kmpl in city conditions and 19.73 kmpl on highways. On the other hand Alto CNG offers 17 km per kg in city conditions and 20.2 km per kg on highways. Hyundai Eon

Ford Figo is a sleek looking hatchback that is one of the best selling small cars in India. Offered in both petrol and diesel engine options, Figo is a preferred choice in the hatchback segment due to its high performance and low maintenance. Figo has won many accolades even since it made its debut in India in the year 2010, within two and a half years of its launch, the hatchback has achieved a landmark in terms of sales and is up for a makeover soon. The 1.2 litre Duratec petrol mill generates 71 PS at 6250 Rpm and 102 Nm at 4000 Rpm. The petrol engine delivers a fuel economy of 13 kmpl in city conditions and 15.6 kmpl on highways. The diesel engine which is a more popular trim, is housed with a 1.4 litre Duratorq diesel motor that poops out 69 PS at 4000 Rpm and 160 Nm at 2000 Rpm. The diesel version is very frugal and runs around 15.8 kmpl in city conditions along with 20 kmpl on highways. Ford Figo has a capacious boot space, it can easily seat five adults inside the cabin. Chevrolet Beat

Price: 3.73 lakh to Rs 5.70 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi)

Chevrolet Beat is yet another popular option in the small car segment which can easily be spotted on roads. Launched earlier in petrol version, the model was later launched in LPG and diesel engine options. The USP of this hatchback it is exterior appearance that makes it different from the other hatchbacks in its segment. The petrol and LPG variant is packed with a 1.2 litre engine with 79 PS at 6200 Rpm and 108 Nm at 4000 Rpm. Honda Brio

Maruti Swift is undoubtedly one of the most selling and loved cars in India. The popularity of the hatchback remains intact even after seven years of its launch in India. The hatchback is offered in both petrol and diesel engine options, the petrol version is powered with a 1.2 litre K-Series petrol motor, that returns 87 PS at 6000 Rpm and 114 Nm at 4000 Rpm. On the other hand Maruti Swift diesel is packed with a 1.3 litre Fiat sourced diesel motor that pumps 75 PS at 4000 Rpm and 190 Nm at 2000 Rpm. Fuel economy is yet another interesting feature of this hatchback, the petrol version delivers 14.5 kmpl in city conditions and 18.6 kmpl on highways. The diesel version is highly fuel efficient and is capable of returning 19 kmpl in city conditions and 22.9 kmpl on highways.
