Best selling cars in India succumb to slowdown

In a scenario when petrol prices are already up despite of a breather today, interest rates are high, car prices have increased, sales of best selling cars in India have seen a drastic decline. These cars including Maruti Wagon R, Hyundai i10, Chevrolet Spark and Tata Indica are worth mentioning that have received much less sales in May this year as compared to April. Also these cars makers have also doled out lucrative offers in order bring back some activity to the sales chart but in vain. The present decrease in petrol price is expected to bring some smile on the faces but not a cheerful one. As per the information, the offers on cars are the highest in the last three years.

In addition to this, other best selling cars such as Maruti Swift, Maruti Swift Dzire, Nissan Micra, Volkswagen Vento and others have almost maintained their sales trend and seems to be unaffected by the slowdown sweep. The major impact on the sales of the best selling cars in India is due to the fact that most of these are petrol cars and with the rise in petrol prices, the petrol car sales took a steep plunge. Resultantly, cars such as Maruti Alto, Hyundai Eon, Honda Brio and other cars that are in fact the entry level cars in India as well received a jolt. Though there are some individual reasons for low performance of these cars but largely it is due to the prices of petrol.

Skoda Fabia and Volkswagen Polo remained the worst hit with 77 percent and 67 percent dip in sales in May this year compared to April this year. Strikingly, Honda City sales have improved by over 44 percent in May compared to April which is the second highest after Maruti SX4 sales that got a jump of over 56 percent. In addition to this sales data also predicts that Toyota Etios sedan and Liva sales have also improved considerably last month and it improved by more than 18 percent in May. As per sources, it seems that with the slash in petrol prices, there will be a slight comeback in sales in the coming months.

It is to be noted that next month will be the one to watch out for, as Renault Duster will be launched in India that too in petrol as well as diesel choices. Here the Renault Duster base petrol model price is expected to be kept lower in order to attract car buyers. But in these times of sky rocketing petrol costs will this strategy be worth, only time will tell a correct tale.
