Bharat NCAP To Come In Effect From August 22, 2023
Finally, the highly-awaited Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP), the programme developed to assess the safety features offered in new vehicles manufactured and sold in India, will come into effect from August 22, 2023. According to a recent report, the Honourable Minister of the Ministry of Road Transport, Nitin Gadkari, will launch the programme. The introduction of the Bharat NCAP will be a significant step toward increasing safety on roads.

With the introduction of the Bharat NCAP programme, the buyers of new vehicles in India can compare the ratings of safety features offered in a vehicle they buy. This program facilitates car manufacturers to provide their vehicles voluntarily according to Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197. Depending upon the performance of the vehicles, they will be awarded star ratings for Adult Occuapnts (AOP) and Child Occupants (COP). These ratings help in comparing the safety features available in different vehicles and making purchase decisions accordingly.
Industry experts believe that the introduction of the Bharat NCAP programme will not only improve the safety of vehicles manufactured in India but will also compel manufacturers to consider customer expectations from buying their vehicles. It is also believed that the introduction of the programme will also increase concern for safety features in vehicles. Currently, Indian carmakers have to send their vehicles to Global NCAP to ensure the integration of safety features.
