Car dealer ends up paying penalty for delayed delivery, charging extra

Giving a lesson to car dealers, a consumer court in Pune has slapped a penalty of Rs 16,000 on a local car dealer to be paid to a customer. The dealer has reportedly overcharged amount from the customer and had also delayed the delivery of Hyundai i10 to the customer. Notably, the number of cars in India are increasing and products such as Maruti Ertiga and others are there and some like Ford Ecosport are in waiting, the competition is bound to rise leading to cut throat competition among car dealers.

With this, the number of dealers is also on the rise – both company as well as local dealers. In such a scenario, dealers sometimes overstep and proffer highly lucrative offers that even they cannot sustain and thus the car buyer ends up being cheated. Notably, this is one of the many incidents wherein the dealers have been found to have cheated the customers by charging extra amount and not delivering the car on time. The present incident is believed to ascertain accountability of car dealers across the country.

As per sources information as well as reports published on the internet, a car buyer in Pune, Deepika Mathur (name changed) booked an Hyundai i10 at a local car dealer and she was asked to deposit the amount and was promised that the car will be delivered on March 31, 2011. However, even after constant reminder she could get her car in a fortnight after the promised delivery date. Besides this, she was also issued receipts of an amount that was less than what she has actually paid. Sensing this she asked the dealer in writing about this but she got not satisfactory reply. Realizing that she has been cheated, she filed move the local consumer court that immediately asked the dealer to submit reply. No satisfactory reply came and in the light of the circumstances of the case, the court imposed a penalty of around Rs 16k on the dealer.
