Car VIP number craze on the high in Chandigarh, builder shells out Rs 26 lakh
He could have a Volvo S60 or Volkswagen Passat or Hyundai Santa Fe or Nissan Teana or Audi Q3 instead, but a Chandigarh based builder has paid whooping Rs 26.05 lakh for just his favorite number. He paid this amount in order to get 'CH-01-AP-0001' for his Mercedes S Class. Builder Amarjit Singh is a great fan of cars. More than that, he is big fan on ‘001’ and he got this number for his S Class car. The story of purchasing favorite number is not new but Amarjit’s buy has added a new chapter to it. Alternatively at Rs 26 lakh the builder could have any of the cars but choose to continue with the bid and he won it.

This is the biggest bid for favorite number in Chandigarh and prior to this some agriculturist turned businessman Jagjit Singh Chahal paid Rs 17 lakh for 'CH-01-AN-0001' number for his Toyota Land Cruiser. The Land Cruiser price was Rs 85 at that time. In the bid for 'CH-01-AP-0001' that Amarjit Singh won for his Mercedes S Class, there was another bidder who took the bid to Rs 26 lakh for this number to be on his new Rolls Royce car but he gave up at Rs 26 while Amarjit Singh won by bidding Rs 26.05 lakh. Interestingly, the reserve price for this number was only Rs 25, 000 but in case of multiple applications the Chandigarh vehicle registration authorities had to call for a bid on Thursday.
The tradition of having the ‘001’ series on the car number plate is not new in Chandigarh and it was Narinder Singh Shergill who won the bid for 'CH 01-AC 001' for his Toyota Fortuner SUV for Rs 10 lakh. This was in 2010 and this was the first time that anybody has bid for a favorite number to the tune of above Rs 10 lakh.
