Cars soon to have fuel efficiency rating, fuel guzzlers will be phased out
Imagine if Chevrolet wants to continue to sell new Chevrolet Beat Diesel that currently has a mileage of 20.44 kmpl after eight years from now it must ensure a mileage of 24.52 kmpl. Strange! But this is what the new policy that the government is about to implement. As per the new policy, the car maker needs to improve the fuel efficiency of its cars by 20 percent in next eight years. Besides, every car that will be produced in India will have a fuel efficiency rating on it. This new rating system will be implemented from next year.

The new rules will also penalize car makers for not confirming with the fuel efficiency standards. The new norms are a clear hint to the car makers that India is not a dumping ground for fuel guzzlers and it is a country that is conscious about the environment as well as the depleting fuel supply. The fuel rating system will have a full five star rating on the lines of Euro NCAP rating that people have heard of but it will be for the fuel efficiency of cars in India. The highest rating will have five stars, while the lowest one will have one star. The assessment for the star rating will be based on standards and every deviation from the standard will be taken up seriously and car makers will be heavily penalized and the car model will have to be discontinued.

Which cars will survive this wind that is about to blow is not yet clear but the most fuel efficient cars including Tata Indica eV2, Chevrolet Beat Diesel, Tata Indigo eCS, Maruti Ertiga, Renault Duster and other cars are expected to survive while cars known for their low fuel efficiency will be wiped out of the Indian car industry post this policy.
