Cars To Get Costlier With Strict Emission Norms

Buying a car is going to get expensive the next year. According to recent reports, the new emission norms will kick start in April 2023. Keeping this deadline in concerns the passenger and commercial vehicle manufacturers have to update their vehicles accordingly. This will put an extra financial burden on their cost of operations. With the implementation of the new emission norms, the vehicles manufactured in India will be the same as Euro-VI emission norms.

The process of upgrading the four-wheelers following the new emission norms is more sophisticated. Industry experts believe this will increase the cost of production, which will indirectly impact new customers. According to the new emission norms, the vehicles will be equipped with a self-detecting device to track real-time driving emission levels. Commenting on this Veejay Nakra, President, Mahindra & Mahindra, Automotive Sector, said, "There would be a marginal to moderate material cost impact both on gasoline and diesel engines on account of these changes”.

In the words of Rahul Bharti, Executive Officer, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, "We are on course for BS VI phase 2 transition also. In fact, out of the total 61 applications, we have already transitioned 31 applications to BS VI Phase 2 almost a year ahead of the compliance date. The remaining 30 applications will also be completed within time”.

Speaking on the same, Shailesh Chandra, MD, Passenger-Vehicles, Tata Motors, said, "I cannot comment immediately but it will not be as drastic as what we had seen in the transition from BS IV to BS VI”.
