Delhi And UP Among Top EV-Using States

According to Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari, there are more than 18 lakh electric vehicles registered throughout the country at present. In the words of the honourable minister, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra are among the top Indian states to record the maximum number of electric vehicles in the country. In a written reply presented in the Rajya Sabha, the minister said, with 4,14,978 registered electric vehicles Uttar Pradesh stands at the top position, Delhi with 1,83,074 and Maharashtra with 1,79,087 registered electric vehicles stood at second and third position respectively.

Further, the minister said, Maharashtra has the maximum number of active public EV charging stations (660) PCS, along with 539 and 439 PCD in Delhi and Tamil Nadu respectively. Moving ahead, Gadkari said, 5,151 public electric charging stations are operating in different corners of the country. He also added that with the implementation of the Fastag system for toll collection there is a decrease in traffic on toll plazas.

To offer more facilities on toll plazas, the National Highways Authority of India is finding options for introducing a more advanced toll collection system on toll plazas. In the words of Gadkari, the ministry has appointed an agency to conduct a study to understand the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology. In the words of the minister, a pilot project based on ANPR technology has been introduced on Delhi-Meerut Expressway. Under this system, as soon as any vehicle enters and exits from the highway the toll fee is deducted from his account by the pictures captured from ANPR cameras.
