Delhi Government Readying To Ban BS4 Diesel Cars

For the residents of New Delhi and NCR, this news can be disappointing. According to reports, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) a commission of the Central government plans to ban BS4 diesel cars in Delhi and its surrounding areas. The CAQM has upgraded its Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to cope with the problem of air pollution. The upgraded plan reveals that the authorities will have the power to ban all diesel vehicles with BS4 certification in New Delhi and the areas of NCR if there is the projected Air Quality Index is more than 450.

According to CAQM, the ban on these diesel vehicles will come into effect as the fourth and final stage of restrictions that will be active once the AQI is close to going above 450. If this plan comes into action, it will make about 9,42,447 diesel vehicles including private cars useless from running on Delhi and NCR roads. It will result in a transportation crisis in the city.

Commenting on this situation the sources said, that the plan mainly focuses on diesel vehicles due to excessive nitrogen oxide gas produced by them, affecting human health. On the other side, the BS 6 diesel vehicles emit less nitrogen. The revised GRAP proposes the Delhi government to also ban BS 3 petrol cars in the third phase of restrictions when the projected AQI goes above 400.

It is believed that there are almost  29,57,630 BS 3 vehicles in Delhi and NCR. However, the actual number of petrol cars from these vehicles is not known. The diesel cars which are more than 10 years old in Delhi are already on the verge of deregistration.
