EV Charging Stations in India: Demand and Availability

With the government working on encouraging electric mobility within the country by 2030, the major car manufacturers have started working on a new vehicle development strategy. Besides, various obstacles like incentives to the manufacturers by government, subsidy to the buyers, etc. The problem which sounds to be gigantic among others is the availability of charging stations at different locations. Although the manufacturers provide the facility of charging the vehicle at home with a fast-charging charger, still there is a necessity of having charging stations to facilitate the electric vehicle owners for charging their vehicle in the middle of their journey. Moreover, with the government lowering the GST on EV to 5 percent from 12 percent and deduction in income tax is believed to encourage the use of electric vehicles among the buyers in India.

Keeping all these factors in concern, the car manufacturers are also working on developing the sustainable number of charging stations at different locations across the country. Recently, the domestic car maker Tata Motors has announced to extend its network of charging stations to 700 by the end of next year. According to the company reports it has about 100 charging stations in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, and intends to extend this number to 300 by the end of March 2020.

The same type of report is also coming from the office of another home-grown carmaker Mahindra & Mahindra that it is also planning to establish about 800 charging stations across the country in the coming years. Keeping these factors in concern it can be speculated that in the coming years, the electric vehicle segment will witness a boost among the buyers. But, now the major question which seems to be unsolved is that will these charging stations be able to cater to the needs of electric vehicle owners throughout the country?

Because according to an estimate there is the necessity of almost more than 20,000 electric charging stations and the speed by which the stations are being developed, the success of electric mobility seems to be suspicious. However, going through the endorsements made by various manufacturers it can be believed that even if the government could not succeed in making the country running fully on electric vehicles till 2030, it will succeed in achieving satisfactory results till that period. As in the words of Mr. Praveer Sinha, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Tata Power, "We are mapping the locations where EVs are launched and will be setting up charging stations in those cities. Our aim is to take this number to around 700 by next year,"
