It has been for the first time that the annual World Car Awards have been announced officially for each category instead of the high profile event organized during the New York International Auto Show. The decision regarding the announcement of the award through live broadcast was taken in wake of the existing COVID-19 pandemic to protect the participants across the world from infections. Well, returning to results the Kia Soul EV from the Korean carmaker Kia Motors has been honored as the World Urban Car of the Year 2020. The SUV received tough competition from Volkswagen T-Cross and MINI Electric. Along with this, the winners of categories like World Performance Car, World Luxury Car, and the World Car Design were also announced by the jury.

 

 

Expressing his views on this achievement, Mr.Thomas Schemera, Executive Vice President and Head of Product Division at Kia Motors Corporation, said, "This is one of the hardest-fought competitions in the global automotive industry, proving that the Soul EV is a truly outstanding vehicle for drivers in towns and cities. This accolade is testament to the talents and efforts of a worldwide team, who all strive to create desirable, high-quality and practical cars that drivers love."

 

Addressing the event, World Car Awards Program co-chair, Mike Rutherford, commented, "The World Urban Car award is increasingly significant as these clever, comparatively small cars measuring up to 4.2m long are among the biggest-selling, most accessible, best value vehicles in showrooms across the globe. The fact is that large towns and cities with limited road space/off-street parking facilities continue to attract more residents, workers, and other visitors. With this trend in mind, the popularity of urban cars is growing - and can only grow further. These are the logical, affordable, real-world automotive products for the motoring masses."

 

It would be interesting to know that this year the organizers of the World Car Awards and the organizers of the New York Auto Show are celebrating the fifteen years of their partnership. The results of the top 10 and top five finalists of the contests were announced during the Indian Auto Expo 2020 held earlier this year in New Delhi. The list of final winners was received through secret ballots via KPMG.
