Government Officials Don’t Want To Travel In EVs Supplied by EESL

Last year when the government-owned Energy Efficiency Services Ltd, purchased the electric vehicles supplied by the domestic car makers Tata Motors and Mahindra and Mahindra, for use by the officials of the government department, it was believed that it will be a big step for encouraging the use of electric vehicles across the country. But, it now seems that the government’s efforts are going to step down due to the refusal of by the officials to not use these vehicles for transportation. According to the reports, one of the government’s officials on the condition of not disclosing his name said that the cars supplied to them are not performing according to the endorsed performance.

EELS Officials Delivering the Keys To Government Officials

According to the bid invited by EESL last year, homegrown carmakers Tata Motors and Mahindra had supplied 350 and 150 units of their EVs to the group, in the first phase. In the second phase 9500 vehicles would be supplied by them to EELS, of which M&M will be supplying 40% of the vehicles. It is reported that the vehicles supplied by both the car makers namely Tata Tigo and Mahindra e-Verito did not deliver an average of driving 80-82 kms after single charge and the capacity of the battery is also not according to the global standards. The reason which is regarded responsible for poor average by these vehicles is use of 17 kW battery which according to the global standards should between 27-35 kW, this results in poor average.

Commenting on the existing scenario, the spokesperson of Tata Motors said, "As part of our tender with Energy Efficiency Services, we have already completed the production of 250 cars and initiated the execution of phase II orders. We are committed to the government's e-mobility mission by 2030, and continue to work in a collaborative manner to facilitate faster adoption of electric vehicles and to build a sustainable future for India."

Now with the refusal by the officers of government to use these vehicles, it is expected that there would be a delay in procurement of the vehicles that were supposed to be delivered in the second phase. It is also rumored that with supply of low quality products the supply of the third tender might be postponed.
