Hydrogen And Green Fuel To Satisfy Future Fuel Needs Of India
Honourable Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has a strong focus on sustainable powertrain and fuel solutions. He recently reaffirmed his belief that hydrogen and green fuels are the future of India. Speaking at an event, Gadkari mentioned that Indian farmers would soon be able to produce green fuel and hydrogen within the country. This move could potentially save India around ₹16 lakh crore per year, which is currently spent on importing fossil fuels.

While the minister didn't specify a timeline for the shift to electric vehicles, he did mention that it is inevitable. In the past, the government had set a deadline of 2030 to achieve full adoption of electric vehicles. However, the cost of these new energy vehicles remains a challenge for mass adoption. For instance, a petrol-driven car costs ₹6 lahk, while the electric version of the same car costs over ₹10 lahk, making it too expensive for most buyers.
Despite this, Gadkari is optimistic that lithium-ion battery costs will decrease in the next year or so, making electric vehicles more affordable. He also hopes that India will become a net exporter of lithium, as the country recently discovered a large lithium deposit.
Overall, the Indian government has been increasingly emphasizing the need for greener fuel solutions such as hydrogen, ethanol mixed petrol, and lithium-ion electric batteries. While the intention to shift towards sustainable mobility remains the same, the cost of adoption remains a challenge. However, with advancements in technology and increased production, there is hope for a greener and more sustainable future.
