Hyundai steps-up production to keep a check on waiting periods for Verna and iGen i20

Hyundai Motors like Maruti India and other car makers are sailing in the same boat. And this boat too is powered by diesel. Sensing a huge demand for diesel cars ahead in FY 13 and to put a check on rising waiting periods, Hyundai has ramped up the production of the diesel models of Hyundai Verna and recently facelifted Hyundai i20 iGen. It is expected that Hyundai will be producing 50 percent more of these diesel cars starting this month. Notably both the Verna diesel and i20 diesel cars are best selling in their segment and Hyundai expects that it is these cars that will help it attain the number one position in India.  

Currently, Hyundai is reportedly producing over 7000 units of Verna and i20 diesel and starting this month the number will reach to over 10,000 unit cars. In addition to this to meet the increasing demand for diesel cars, the Korean car maker has started sourcing diesel engines from its homeland as well. The primary cause of a boost in demand for diesel cars in India is the difference in the price of petrol and diesel. Notably, companies have put on hold their expansion plans following the pre-budget wave that predicted an imposition of tax on diesel cars to compensate the increasing use of subsidized diesel fuel by cars. However, the budget came as a breather and paved the way for the companies to stick to their expansion plans.  

HMIL Director (Marketing and Sales) Arvind Saxena has reportedly said in a statement issued by the car maker that the increase in production is in view to curtail the rising waiting period for these cars. Currently, the waiting period on Verna diesel is 6 months and iGen i20 is around 2 months. The company hopes to bring it down under 2 months for Verna and less than one month for iGen i20.
