India Creates A Landmark Of Blending 10% Ethanol In Petrol

Where other nations are struggling to bring down the percentage of carbon emissions in the environment, India has made it possible with five months still pending to achieve this target. Addressing the nation on the World Environment Day on June 5, 2022, the honourable Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, announced that India has succeeded in achieving the target of mixing 10 per cent ethanol in petrol before the five months of its fixed schedule. He also added that n 2014 the percentage of blending ethanol in petrol was only 1.5 per cent.

The honourable Prime Minister was addressing the audience during the event organised by Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev’s Isha Foundation. In his address, he also mentioned the steps taken by his government to protect the environment during the last eight years.  In the words of the Prime Minister, blending the 10% of ethanol in petrol has offered three important benefits. The first one is that it has helped in reducing 27 lakh tonnes of carbon emissions, secondly, India has managed to save more than Rs 41,000 crore in eight years, and thirdly, the farmers have earned more than Rs 40,000 during the same period.

According to the Prime Minister, “ “To meet our energy needs from renewable sources, we are working on increasingly bigger goals. We had set a target of achieving 40 per cent of our installed power generation capacity from non-fossil fuel based sources. India has achieved this target 9 years ahead of schedule”.

It would be interesting to learn that the global average for carbon emissions per person is four tonnes, whereas, in India, the carbon footprint per person is only a half tonner per year. The honourable Prime Minister, said,  “Despite this, India is working towards the environment with a holistic approach, not only within the country but also by engaging with the global community”.
