India witnesses sudden shift from hatchbacks to MPVs

The profit results of the third quarter of the current financial year clearly suggest that Mahindra & Mahindra has outnumbered Tata Motors. With this M&M became the third largest passenger car maker as far as sales are concerned. Tata Motors on the other hand managed to sell around 60,405 units in that period; however M&M sold 61,504 units taking a leap by 1,099 units. Mahindra & Mahindra does not have even a single small car in its portfolio, despite that it managed to outshine Tata Motors in terms of sales in the third quarter. On the other hand, Tata Motors has Tata Nano and Tata Indica in its clan of cars, but sluggish demand resulted in low sales.

The domestic car market is known as a hub for small cars, therefore car makers make sure to include at-least one hatchback in its portfolio. Hatchback segment accounts for a huge chunk of accrued sales. Mahindra & Mahindra sells Verito sedan which is the only sedan being sold under its badge, rest all vehicles on sales under M&M are either SUVs or MPVs. On the other hand Tata Motors has few sedans and hatchbacks long with SUVs and MPVs.

Now it would be interesting to see whether the sales result for the entire year would also follow the same trend of will it change in the favour of Tata Motors. This clearly shows that the interest of the customers is shifting towards MPVs instead of hatchbacks. With time the auto trend is changing with a fast pace, at the 11th Auto Expo held in New Delhi in the month of January, a number of MPVs were seen displayed at the grandiose event. These MPVs are slated to launch in India by the end of the year which include, Chevrolet Enjoy, Nissan Evalia etc.
