Jeep To Name Its Upcoming SUV As “Commander”
Finally, the name of the upcoming seven-seater SUV from the US-based carmaker Jeep is out. In a recent teaser released by the carmaker, the SUV is speculated to be named “Commander” instead of the earlier rumoured name Patriot. The proposed SUV is reported to make its debut sometime during the middle of this year.
According to the sources the new teaser displays the alphabets “ER” thus indicating the ending name of the SUV. The company is already using the same name in the Chinese carmaker where it sells the seven-seater SUV named Grand Commander. The Commander nameplate was used by the company for the first time back in 2005 when it launched the Grand Commander in China and placed it above the Grand Cherokee. Unfortunately, the Grand Commander could not enjoy the expected success and was phased out from the Chinese carmaker in 2011.

Under the hood, the Jeep Commander will be empowered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine outsourced from the Compass. Along with this, it will be also offered with an option of a twin-turbocharged engine that generates the power of 200 bhp and the torque of 400Nm. The transmission duties will be performed by a nine-speed automatic transmission system. It will be based on the Small-Wide 4x4 platform and will go against the likes of Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner, and the MG Gloster.
The spies have captured the seven-seater SUV undergoing test drives several times on Indian and Brazilian roads. From the teaser released by the company, the SUV is believed to receive more restrained front fascia than compared to elder sibling Compass. It will receive most of its cues from the new Grand Cherokee.
On the exterior front, it will receive an upright seven-slat grille, lowered roofline, LED headlamps, aggressive tailgate and rear bumper. Inside the cabin, it will receive three-row seats. The other details related to the interior are not exhibited in the teaser, it is speculated to be equipped with a digital instrument console, panoramic sunroof, multi-zone climate control, large touchscreen infotainment system that supports connectivity with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa.
