Kitna Deti hai, ab mat poochna: cars soon to have a mileage label on them
Soon you will find a label on Maruti Ertiga or Tata Indica, or BMW X3 sold in India saying that how much mileage these cars return. And then one need not ask ‘Kitna Deti hai’ as every car will have a tag on it that will show how much mileage it returns per lliter of fuel. Interestingly, it is over four years now that such a proposal of labeling cars is on cards and there has been more than sufficient brainstorming on this issue than any concrete output. Soon every car will have such as label. The motive behind such labels on cars in India is to promote car makers to build high fuel efficiency cars.

The labels will reflect the government certified mileage or more commonly that we know, ARAI certified that the car delivers and it will be mandatory. Soon the government will be making it mandatory as well for the companies to improve the efficiency of cars year on year. The labels will also reflect the mileage delivered by other cars of the same segment. Thus this will also help car buyers to have an instant comparison of the car with respect to mileage it delivers in comparison to other cars.

In India among the high mileage cars segment wise are - Ford Figo, Hyundai Eon, Chevrolet Beat, Tata Indica Vista and Hyundai i10 in the small car segment while the latest addition of Maruti Ertiga that delivers 20.77 kmpl on diesel is the highest in MPV segment. Toyota Prius, Tata Indigo XL and Maruti Swift Dzire in the sedan segment and Skod Yeti, Premier Rio and Mahindra Bolero are some of the best mileage cars in the SUV segment. As per sources, the top ten manufacturers that sell almost 96 percent of the cars in India have an average fuel efficiency of 16.42 kmpl. The government will do all efforts to take this to 15.15 kmpl by 2015 and 20.79 kmpl by 2020.
