Maruti car sales dip by 5 percent in March, 2012-13 FY sales too remains weak

The Indian car bazaar is in a bad shape. All the indicators including the health monitor – Maruti car sales, is ill. Maruti car sales are down by 5 percent in March this year. Also, the 2012-2013 FY has been meek for the car maker with a just over 3 percent growth. Maruti Swift Dzire and Maruti Ertiga remained the best selling Maruti cars in India besides Maruti Alto 800 and others. It is believed that, if the seniors of the industry are ill, it may indicate that there is something wrong in the weather. Already the car sales were impacted by high interest rates, slow demand and price rise of petrol and diesel and then the Budget came in that did gave the last blow and all positive indicators were gone.

In March 2012 Maruti sold 1.26 lakh cars while it could sell only around 1.20 lakh cars in March this year. This is a dip by 4.78 percent. In FY 12-13 the car maker sold 11.71 lakh cars which is up by 3.33 percent compared to FY 11-12. Meanwhile, the domestic sales took a downturn by 4.29 percent and sales came down to 1.07 lakh units in March this year.

A close look at the segment wise sales data predicts that the mini segment cars witnessed a dip of around 15 percent while the compact segment did witness a dip by over 7 percent. Interestingly, sales of Swift Dzire rose by 22.05 percent while the utility segment has become four fold. Though Maruti SX4 sales dipped by over 40 percent in March; it is expected to take an upswing as the new SX4 is in recently. The worst performer among Maruti cars is Maruti Kizashi that had no takers in March.
