Maruti, Hyundai speed up their diesel car projects

Diesel, diesel everywhere not a petrol car to see…. This is what will be the scenario in the Indian car market soon – at least the entry level cars segment. Soon Hyundai i10, Maruti Alto, Hyundai Eon, upcoming Maruti Cervo and other cars from the two market leaders will be available in diesel. Where carmakers had a single agenda of promoting their cars, they are under pressure of developing diesel cars and promote their petrol car models in order to show some numbers on the sales chart. Car market leaders in India such as Maruti and Hyundai have reportedly fuelled their diesel car projects and soon there will be an array of diesel car launches in India.

With this, the Indian car market will be a ‘dirty’ fuel powered market. However, the car market is already on track to transform itself into a diesel car market with staunch petrol car sellers such as Honda thinking of launching diesel cars in India, the other are seriously thinking of putting diesel motors in their petrol cars. Honda and Maruti are the two car makers that highly bank on their petrol cars. Where Honda has all petrol car offerings, Maruti has some of its models available in diesel. Whereas Hyundai also has its models available in petrol and diesel both starting from Hyundai i20 onwards. The entry level cars such as Hyundai Eon, Hyundai i10, Maruti Alto continue to be offered in petrol and since this is the hottest segment, it is expected that the two prominent car makers will be pitching in the diesel avatar of these cars soon.

Notably, Hyundai Accent, the sedan by Hyundai also lacks a diesel motor and it would not be a wonder if the Koreans put in a diesel motor in it first. Meanwhile, in order to maintain sustainable sales, car makers are offering discounts on their petrol car models. Other car makers such as Ford, General Motors and Toyota have already put in more emphasis on diesel cars and have already expanded their diesel car production capacity in the country.
