Maruti Manesar plant to restart production on August 21

Maruti’s Manesar plant that has been out of production for almost a month will be reopening on August 21. Initially, the plant will be run at a low capacity and will produce 150 Maruti cars a day that too under heavy security and police protection. Notably, the plant produces Maruti Swift hatchback and Maruti Swift Dzire sedan which are the best selling Maruti cars. The plant was closed down on July 18 after violence broke down and one person was killed and hundred others were injured in the incident. As per the official announcement made by the car maker, the plant will be armed with policemen and other security staff and these men will make sure that nothing adverse happens at the car plant.

150 cars a day; Swift and Dzire on focus

Only 150 units a day will be produced and later when things smoothen and situation normalizes, the plant will be regaining its full capacity. The plant has an annual capacity of producing 5.5 lakh cars or over 1700 cars a day. The plant will be focusing on Swift and Swift Dzire production initially to meet the rising local demand for the cars and soon the production of Maruti SX4 and Maruti A Star will also be restored back to normal.

500 workers fired out of 1600 permanent workers

In order to ensure that nothing of the July 18 like incident happens at the site, Maruti has terminated over 500 workers out of the 1600 permanent employees. Meanwhile, out of the 100 employees injured, most of them have been discharged from the hospital and a majority of them have rejoined.

Police protection at the plant

As per the reports, over 100 policemen with arms will be spread across the plant and these men will be keeping an eye on every worker to make sure things remain smooth and production is restored at the plant. Notable, the Haryana police will be providing the protection at the plant.

Meanwhile, the police has also detained more people related to the incident on August 1 and this takes the total number of arrested to 114. The causes of the incident are still being told as a clash between the employees and the managerial staff but there were reports of a foreign hand or a Naxal hand in the incident but in the absence of any evidence, Maruti as well as police is denying such an angle. Meanwhile, the start of production after a month of outage is seen as a positive development specially eyeing the festive season ahead.
