Maruti Suzuki India Limited Dominates The Indian Car Market
Country’s leading car maker Maruti Suzuki India Limited has succeed in retaining its top position in Indian car market more strongly than ever during the decade. According to sales data revealed by company for the first two months (April and May) of the ongoing financial year (2017-18) the Indo-Japanese car maker group has sold 274,320 passenger vehicles in domestic car as compared to 254,930 units sold by other car manufacturers together across the country. It would be interested to know that where the whole industry witnessed the growth of 12 percent during these two months, MSIL alone witnessed the growth of 19 percent.

During the month of April and May the group surprisingly recorded the growth of 52 percent share in domestic market, whereas its strong contender has share of only 16 percent in overall sales and recorded decline of about four percent in sales during the same months. MSIL’s share in market during FY 2016-17 for the same months was 48.6 percent, however as the whole company’s share during FY2017 was 47.3 percent which was mainly because of slow supply of air conditioning units from the supplier.
It would be interested to know that after starting its production activities at its unit in Gujarat from February this year the group has succeed in giving substantial pace to its operational activities. Commenting on the situation Mr. R.C.Bhargava, Chairman, said, “The market share fluctuates on a monthly basis. We have to wait for the entire year to see a trend. The demand looks alright as of now. Our capacity has increased due to Gujarat plant,” The production unit located at Gujarat has the production capacity of 250,000 units annually when used to its full efficiency of working on two shifts. At present it is being operated for single shift and working for second shift is expected to commence from September-October this year.
Apart from being holding about 52 percent share in Indian car market the Indo-Japanese car makers have now also superseded domestic car maker Mahindra and Mahindra from being the largest utility vehicle manufacturer in the country from the month of May this year.
