Maruti Swift, Dzire, Ertiga did it again, Maruti gains 3.2 percent growth in sales
Is the Indian car industry healthy or it is ailing? If we consider December 2012 growth figure of Maruti India, which is considered to be the touchstone of car industry’s health, then it can be comfortably said that it is not at all in a good state but is stable. At least not worse. In December 2012, Maruti India has posted a growth of 3.24 percent over the same month in 2011. In the month, Maruti Swift Dzire and Maruti Ertiga are the two cars that have registered highest growth. The car maker sold as high as 95145 units which is slightly higher than the sales in December 2011.

Some experts believe that a growth figure of only 3.24 percent is shocking as the car maker was expected to post higher growth as the latest entry Maruti Alto 800 has given a sudden push to sales of Maruti cars in the country. Meanwhile, other experts believe that the Alto 800, Swift, Swift Dzire and Ertiga have in fact saved Maruti from negative growth otherwise the scenario would have been somewhat different. The industry gauges the health of the industry by the sales of Maruti cars and to an extent Hyundai cars. Now that Hyundai has posted a loss of 9 percent in sales, while Maruti too had a meek growth, it can be comfortably inferred that the industry was not at all in a good shape in December. Though the industry doled out a lot of offers and discounts but the car buyers resisted from moving to the showroom in December. It is believed that the lost sheen in December will return in this month.

As per the details, Maruti sold 32979 units of mini segments cars that include Maruti 800, Maruti A Star, Maruti Alto and Maruti Wagon R but compared to December 2011, the sales in the segment fell by over 15 percent. Meanwhile, the giant sold around 22484 cars including Maruti Estilo, Maruti Swift and Maruti Ritz, with an appreciation of 8.86 percent over December 2011. The highest gainer being Swift Dzire that got a sales hike of over 42.30 percent. On the contrary the greatest losers in December 2012 were Maruti SX4 and Maruti Kizashi.
