MoRTH Issues New Guidelines For Signages On Highways
To enhance road safety on national and express highways, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a set of new guidelines for signages. The Union Minister of MoRTH has given his approval to the new guidelines. These new guidelines will help in introducing the new road safety measures in practices, equivalent to the world standards and improve visibility of signages to drivers.

Before the development of the new guidelines, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways Authority considered the codes and guidelines mentioned in the Indian Road Congress (IRC), measures adopted by the developed countries. According to the new guidelines, the new signage will have improved visibility and readability. Moving ahead, they will be displayed at appropriate heights and visible from long distance.
The new signage will have the perfect combination of large alphabets, symbols and short legends capable of providing necessary information even in the worst environment. The guidelines also propose for pictorial presentation of messages, to make them understood by commuters with limited literacy. This will help in better follow of traffic rules and regulations. With this, the MoRTH also proposes multilingual signages due to the diversified languages in India. The signages will be developed in both English and regional languages for people to understand them. According to sources of MoRTH, “The new signages designed under the proposed guidelines will be implemented across all the upcoming highways, expressways and greenfield corridors”.
