In July 2011, the car maker managed to sell a total of 75,300 units of its cars in the Indian market as compared to 100,857 units sold in the same month last year. The company however claimed that the dip was largely due to a planned cut-down in production during the month. The other factors that spoiled Maruti’s show during the month include increased fuel prices and high interest rates on car loans that made the buyers dropping or delaying their plans buying a new car.

Moreover, the Maruti is facing a tough competition from the new international car makers in its strong hold small car segment. In last two years, a range of new generation cars have been launched in the segment of hatchback Swift that comprises of Volkswagen Polo, Nissan Micra, Chevrolet Beat, Toyota Etios Liva and Ford Figo. The launch of new generation Swift will certainly boost the strength of the company in the compact hatchback segment, enabling it to compete more promptly with competitors.

Some of the popular hatchback models in the Indian auto market are Chevrolet Beat Diesel and Hyundai i10. Apart from these popular models, cars going to hit the Indian roads this year are Force One, Nissan Sunny, Maruti Cervo and Honda Brio.
