New Revotron engine concept from Tata Motors
Tata has announced the launch of its new Revotron petrol engine family and revealed the first motor, an all new 1.2-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged, intercooled, multi-point fuel injected (MPFI) petrol motor – the first of its kind to be indigenously developed in India. The Revotron series, the carmaker says, has been designed based on feedback from car owners, enthusiasts and expert drivers from across the globe. The carmaker has worked in association with Austrian global engine consultant AVL and other technological players like Bosch, Honeywell, Mahle and INA.
The carmaker claims the new 1.2-litre petrol motor has been designed to be lightweight and to be low on friction so as to deliver high performance and good fuel economy. The motor develops 83.8bhp at 5,000rpm and 14.3kgm of torque at 1,750-3,500rpm. According to the manufacturer, the engine provides multiple driving modes (a segment first) and its advanced catalytic converter results in lower emissions. Tata has also worked on reducing the noise, vibration and harshness levels with a stiffened crankcase, among other measures. The new engine is CNG-capable and complies with Euro IV and BS IV emissions norms.
The first recipients of this new engine are likely to be the upcoming ‘Falcon’ hatchback and compact saloon that will be unveiled at the Auto Expo next month. The company says the Revotron series will go on to include additional three- and four-cylinder petrol engines in the future.
