New small car from Nissan Datsun to rival Nano, Alto and Eon
Is it finally Nissan-Datsun that will be bringing in Tata Nano, Maruti Alto and Hyundai Eon’s rival? So far so good it seems to be so. As per latest reports in the auto industry media, Nissan will be bringing in a small car from the stable of its low cost car brand Datsun soon. Initial reports suggest that the new small car will be priced around Rs 2.4 lakh. With this Nissan will also be reviving the Datsun brand that was discontinued in 1981. The name of the low cost car is still a mystery so is the launch date.

Reports also suggest that Nissan will be manufacturing Datsun cars in India at its Oragadam plant that is jointly owned by it and French car maker Renault. It is also expected that Nissan might think of an independent plant for Datsun in India. In several of the recent reports, Takayuki Ishida, the new MD and CEO of Nissan's Indian operations has been quoted saying that Nissan India will be launching a mass volume car in India under the Datsun brand. Notably, Datsun used to produce low cost cars that were aimed specially at emerging economies.

Nissan will introduce Datsun brand at the Auto Expo to be held in January 2014 and it is expected that the Japanese car maker will be bringing in the marquee in mid of 2014 then. In addition to this, Nissan is also developing a diesel engine for its hatchbacks that will not only be power packed but will also be high on fuel efficiency. Currently the Japanese car maker has a single small car offering Nissan Micra in India and with the Datsun cars in, it is expected that the car maker will be revolutionize the segment. Equally notable to mention here is that if Nissan could bring a diesel powered small car in the price band of Rs 2 lakh to Rs 4 lakh then no other car maker will be able to match its sales.
