NGT planning extend ban on diesel vehicles to 11 more cities
It is reported that National Green Tribunal is considering a hearing a discussion on banning the transportation of vehicles with more than 2000cc displacement capacity to 11 more cities across the country. According to reports if this decision succeeds in getting green signal from NGT, then it will badly impact the auto industry, because the existing decision of ban on vehicles with 2000cc has already affected the jobs of almost 5,000 people and production of almost 11,000 vehicles.
Commenting on the upcoming decision experts of auto industry say that it will be unscientific and unrealistic for metropolitan cities namely, Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Hyderabad. The ban on diesel vehicles has already been extended by Supreme Court in Delhi for unspecified time limit. Apart from this recently Supreme Court banned the transportation and registration of such vehicles in few cities of Kerala also.
According to some industry reports, every year almost more than 4 lakh units of diesel cars with 2000cc and above displacement capacity are sold in Indian car market. The sources of SIAM (Society of Indian Automotive Manufacturers) commented that if this ban is implemented across the country then it will affect around jobs of almost 47,000 people. On the other side it will also impact worst to the manufacturers as they will have to think for other methods of producing emission free vehicles. In the words of Mr. Vishnu Mathur, Director SIAM, “if the ban on diesel cars does come into force, then the production of diesel cars in India will be taking a very big hit.”
