Number Of Vehicles Recalling Due To Safety Reasons Increases In 2021-22
According to Honourable Minister of Road and Transport, Government of India, Nitin Gadkari, the number of recalled vehicles due to safety concerns increased dynamically in the Financial Year 2021-22. Replying to the monsoon session of the Parliament, Gadkari informed the Lok Sabha that more than 13 lakh vehicles including two-wheelers and passenger cars were recalled to rectify the safety issues.

In a written reply the Minister of Road and Transport said, that based on the data received from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), 8,64,557 two-wheelers and 4,67,311 passengers car were recalled by their respective manufacturers due to safety reasons. Comparing the data of vehicles recalled during the last couple of years, the honourable minister informed that 3.39 lakh vehicles (including both two-wheelers and four-wheelers were recalled during 2020-21, whereas 2.14 vehicles were recalled in 2019-20.
Moving ahead the minister added that Section 110 A of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, empowers the manufacturers to recall their vehicles due to safety reasons. In his words,
"It empowers the central government to direct a manufacturer to recall motor vehicles of a particular type or its variants, if a defect in that particular type of motor vehicle may cause harm to the environment or to the driver or occupants of such motor vehicle or other road users”.
Replying to another question, the honourable minister said, 47.984 people died in accidents on national highways and 33, 148 people died on state highways due to accidents in 2020.
