Renault signs agreement to use Mercedes platform to develop new cars

The French car maker Renault and Germany based leading luxury car maker Mercedes Benz have joined hands to benefit each other by working on a joint platform to develop new luxury cars in the global market. Though both of the companies have been into talks for quite some time now, but their dialogues have reached to the fruition only now.

Renault has recently signed an agreement with Mercedes Benz for developing new luxury vehicles on latter’s platform. The French car maker will be playing a major role in the development of its future luxury hatchback model – Smart.

Renault is looking forward to go a long way with having a Daimler platform based vehicle in its portfolio. Besides using joint platform for the manufacturing of cars, the companies will also use a joint platform for the development of new engine. It is to be mentioned here that Renault and Mercedes Benz’s parent Daimler had signed an agreement to develop new four cylinder engine that will be used in the Nissan-Renault’s upcoming global portfolio model.

While briefing to the reporters on the recent developments of this partnership, Mr. Carlos Ghosn, CEO, Renault said that having a Daimler’s platform based car would go a long way for the company. Though the company has indicated that the Renault vehicles developed on Mercedes Benz will be exclusively sold in the French market only; however, the interested buyers in India can expect the launch of these joint venture vehicles in the India in the coming future.
