Renault to introduce a small 800 cc car in India?

Renault, the French automobile car maker in India is currently working on designing an 800 cc car which will be its cheapest car in the domestic auto-market, as per unconfirmed reports. This 0.8 liter small car would be introduced in the domestic market to compete with other small cars like Maruti Alto and Hyundai Eon. Speculations are that this small car from Renault would hit the Indian shores by 2014 – 15. However, Maruti Suzuki is also looking forward to introduce a 800 cc car by end of the year. The launch might happen at the same time when the company would also be introducing its small car Datsun in the auto-market, therefore it can be expected that parts of Datsun can be used in framing this 800 cc car.  However, Renault India has not confirmed the launch of any 800 cc car in India in near future.

It can also be noted that this 800 cc small car shall be made from Renault-Nissan’s Oragadam plant in Chennai, where the production of Datsun is also expected to commence. To manufacture Datsun, the local resources are expected to be used to low down its production cost; likewise the 800 cc small car can also be expected to be framed from high amount of local resources. Datsun would be Nissan’s low cost car and probabilities are that platform of Datsun can be shared to manufacture this 800 cc Renault hatchback. However, Renault would slate the price of this car slightly more than Nissan Datsun. The company is also willing to launch Renault Scala in India during the festival season this year.

Code named as the A-Entry, the 800 Renault small car can be expected to arrive on the domestic shores in the price range of Rs. 3 – 4 lakh. The company has already started its research work so as to make this car efficient in terms of fuel economy. It is speculated that the company might be focusing on making this new 800 cc engine efficient to deliver fuel economy of 20 kmpl. Till 2014 – 15 the auto-grand, Renault will have enough time expand itself in the Indian sub-continent that will avail it a favourable platform to sell this small efficient car in large numbers.
