Sedans, SUVs gaining preference over small cars
Small is no longer beautiful or wonderful for India, it seems. At least the car sales trend suggests so. Replacing the small cars such as Maruti Alto and Tata Nano from the top ten best selling cars list, cars such as Maruti Swift and Maruti Swift Dzire have made their place. Where Alto still is the best selling car but its sales numbers have come down considerably. Call it the rising income levels of Indian car buyers or call it the global preference for luxury cars and big SUVs that has made this change to happen. In India, Maruti cars such as Alto, Swift, Dzire and Maruti Wagon R are the best selling cars whereas Hyundai i1-, i20 and Nano have lost their market in a considerable manner.
The most affected of all is the Nano that is just struggling to post some numbers but had only around 1500 or so on the list recently. Though the greatest damage is caused by Alto 800 launch in India during the 2012 festive season but the slump in the market also played spoilsport for this over enthusiastic car. Experts believe that people do not consider cars other than that of Maruti so well in India and thus despite of Nano being the cheapest car in the country, people prefer to buy Alto 800 by paying something extra.

There is also a considerable rise in demand for sedans in India and the sales of Swift Dzire suggest it vociferously. The recent entry of the under four meter car Honda Amaze is all set to trigger demand and thus the coming months will witness a further rise in the ratio of sedans selling in India. Also, now people also seems to prefer to buy a sedan by paying something extra than a hatchback.
