Self-driving cars: United States issues license to Google
Until now Google was confined to its search engine and e-mail services, but now it has also acquired licence to test self-driving cars in United States. Nevada, Motor Vehicles officials confirmed the news and said that Google has been given the first ever license in the entire US to test a sovereign vehicle for which a driver is not required on its public streets. After illustrations on state freeways, state highways, and few other states, Nevada issued a special licence to Google. This is very first license issued in US which is covered by the new laws and regulations that brings Nevada in focus of autonomous vehicle development.
The new license plate is red in colour and will have the infinity symbol along with AU letters on it that refers to the autonomous vehicle. Google is a known for inducting innovative ideas space elevators to internet enabled glasses and now with this it has become the first firm ever even to apply for testing the self-driving system in Nevada. Reports also suggest that other auto cos have also expressed their desire to test and actualize this technology in the state.
In 2010 Sebastian Thrun, an engineer and Google X founder had mentioned in one of the posts on Google’s official blog that the motive behind the self-driving vehicle project is to preclude accidents, reduce carbon emissions and this could be attained by wavering the car use. He also mention automated wagons come equipped with video cameras, radio sensors and a laser range finder to keep oneself ahead in traffic and see the detailed maps to maneuver the vehicle. In the beginning of the year 2012, Google stated that it has accomplished around 200,000 miles of computerized driving.
