Small diesel cars in place to rule the auto industry
The domestic and global carmakers in the country are not depressed by the fact that they now have to pay 2% more excise on sales of their vehicles, courtesy Union Budget ‘2012-13. But on the contrast are happy to take positives out of it, in the form of no proposed special taxes on diesel vehicles. That means they can now accelerate the manufacturing of diesel power-trains irrespective of being smaller or bigger engines. The companies like Maruti, Hyundai, Chevrolet, Honda and Nissan-Renault have now pulled up their socks to provide ‘diesel’ essence to their respective array.

One to benefit the most will be Korean carmaker, Hyundai Motors, that has only one hatchback in its lineup Hyundai i20 with diesel choice, and now, for sure Hyundai i10 will get a diesel engine to boost its listing. Prior to the announcement of budget Hyundai had postponed the commencement of diesel engine factory, in order to observe government’s stand on fuel, which it will shortly resume, as the sky is all clear from the diesel engine prospective.

Just imagine Maruti Alto, Maruti Estilo and Maruti WagonR along with Maruti A-Star marching in front of you in tempting diesel option. The market leader at present has hatchbacks Maruti Swift and Maruti Ritz with 1.3 DDiS engines. The company is now focusing on the development of smaller diesel motors in association with Fiat Motors, apart from bigger 1.3L Multijet diesel mills.

The Honda car lovers in the country are eagerly awaiting the launch of diesel run Honda City sedan and compact hatch Honda Brio. On the other hand, General Motors that is expected to soon unleash Chevrolet Sail sedan and Chevrolet Sail hatchback in India, might launch the diesel as well as petrol option at one go. France based car manufacturer Renault is also on the verge of introducing two diesel powered vehicles namely Renault Duster SUV and Nissan Sunny based base-level sedan by late this year.
