Tata Nexon Dominates SUV Segment In India In April 2023
India's SUV market has seen significant growth in the past few years, with buyers preferring SUVs over small cars due to a change in lifestyle and increasing income. As a result, car manufacturers are focusing on upgrading their portfolios with SUVs. The SUV segment has played a crucial role in dominating the sales of major carmakers, as demonstrated by the sales figures for April 2023 in the Indian car market.
Maruti Suzuki, India's leading car manufacturing company which entered late into the segment, is showing signs of catching up, with three models in the list of top 10 SUVs sold in India in April. However, Tata Nexon has retained its position as India's best-selling SUV for the month.
Tata Nexon sold 15,002 units in April, up from 14,769 units sold in March, and 13,471 units sold in April last year. Hyundai's Creta SUV sold 14,186 units, up from 14,026 units sold in March, and 12,651 units sold in April last year. Maruti Suzuki Brezza sold 11,836 units, significantly down from 16,227 units sold in March, but up from 11,764 units sold in April last year.
Tata's smallest SUV, the Punch, found 10,934 buyers last month, up slightly from 10,894 units sold in March, and 10,132 units sold 12 months ago. Hyundai's Venue sold 10,342 units, up marginally from 10,024 units in the previous month, and 8,392 units in April last year.
Kia Sonet sold 9,744 units, its highest since launch two years ago, up from 8,677 units sold in March, and 5,404 units sold in April last year. Mahindra and Mahindra's Scorpio sold 9,617 units in April, up from 8,788 units sold in the previous month, and just 2,712 units sold during the same period last year.
Maruti's latest SUV, the Fronx, stormed into the top 10 list with 8,784 units sold last month. Maruti hopes its SUV share will rise further with the help of this model in the coming days. Maruti Grand Vitara found 7,742 units last month, down significantly from 10,045 units sold in the previous month. Finally, Kia Seltos sold 7,213 units, slightly up from 6,556 units sold in the previous month, and is due for an update soon.
