The First Made-In India Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus Launched

The first made-in-India Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus developed by KPIT-CSI, Pune, was launched by Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Science and Technology, in Pune on August 22, 2022. The bus runs on hydrogen and air, without any fuel, thus not harming the environment. According to sources, the only by-product that will come out from the bus (not emission) will be water, this will help in reducing the emission levels of greenhouse gas.

In the words of the Minister of State for Science and Technology, heavy diesel commercial vehicles emit about 14 per cent CO2 and other hazardous elements. As all of them are decentralized, it is almost difficult to control their impact on the environment. He also added that the use of new fuel technologies, will help in controlling the problem of pollution and emissions.

It would be interesting to know that these buses will be pocket-friendly and highly fuel-efficient. The use of hydrogen plays an important role in offering an improved performance of these vehicles. The use of hydrogen also ensures that the operating costs of these vehicles are lesser than fuel-powered commercial vehicles. The Minister of State for Science and Technology also said that the use of such low-cost fuel options will revolutionize the fleet operating business. As a part of its project to encourage the use of renewable energy, the government of India is going to start the use of hydrogen buses in the region of Leh-Ladakh as a part of its pilot projects.
