Toyota Etios And Etios Liva Will Not Be Seen On Indian Roads From 2020

Going through the requirement of upgrading the existing line of Etios, Etios Liva, and Etios Cross according to new BS-VI norms and safety regulations, Japanese carmaker Toyota Motors has decided to pull down the curtains from the Etios family. The first generation of Etios sedan and hatchback was launched back in 2010 and since then the company has sold out more than 4.44 lakh units of its cars within the country. The major role in this sales figure has been played by the diesel variants of these cars.

According to sales statistics revealed by the company the diesel models of Liva hatchback accounts to 63% of its total sales, whereas 70% of the diesel models of Etios sedan constitute in its sales. Upgrading the existing 1.4-liter D-4D diesel engine for the entire range will require a huge investment from the beginning and also increase the cost of production. On the other side, upgrading the petrol line-up according to the new emission norms will however not financially affect much to the company, but could not help the Etios family to last for a long time.

Industry experts believe that Toyota’s decision of stopping the production of these economical cars is also related to its alliance with another Japanese company Suzuki Motors. This can be witnessed from the recent launch of Glanza hatchback by the Toyota Motors, developed in the collaboration with Suzuki. Developed on the Maruti Suzuki Baleno platform the Glazna hatchback has received an encouraging response from the Indian buyers. Toyota has succeeded in selling out almost 14,000 units of Glanza since its launch in June this year. The discontinuation of the Etios line-up will help the company to fill the space by launching the new vehicles based on the platform used by the Suzuki Motors for developing its vehicles in MPV and Compact SUV segment.
