Toyota, Nissan shelve plans to bring Lexus and Infiniti cars to India
It is the Japanese car maker Suzuki that has brought in the car revolution in India with the Maruti Suzuki 800 that beat the Premier Fiat and Hindustan Ambassador badly. Now this is 2012 and the Japanese carmakers Nissan and Toyota, desist from bringing in their Infiniti and Lexus premium car brands in India. This is expected to be the direct result of India’s free trade agreement with EU following which the car brands such as Mercedes, Audi and BMW will be at advantage compared to the Japanese or other car brand.

Notably, these car makers have expressed their intentions of bringing in their subsidiary luxury car brands to India but now they seem to have taken a u turn on that. However, sources said that still the companies are reassessing the prospects of the new car brands and their cars and it is only after the final assessment that any decision will be taken. Hopefully, the car makers will be taking a decision by the year end. Amidst it, Nissan has its plans of bringing in the low cost car brand Datsun to India and very soon Datsun cars will be launched in the country.

Other factors that are desisting the car makers from include the slowdown in the market as well as the rise in import duty besides the falling rupee. But the EU free trade agreement dilly dallying remains at the prime of such a decision. Not only this, GM India has already put a hold on its plans to bring the Cadillac premium car brand to India and has instead decided to strengthen the Chevrolet brand and launch some exciting offering such as Chevrolet Enjoy MPV. Meanwhile, BMW, Mercedes and Audi has all decided to strengthen their portfolio as they are pretty sure that there will be a positive response out of the EU trade agreement and it will then that they will be highly benefitted.
