Chevrolet Sail UVA VS Hyundai i20
The entry of all new Chevrolet Sail UVA in the Indian car market has further intensified the competition levels in the premium hatchback segment where it is competing with the likes of Maruti Swift, Hyundai i20, Ford Figo, Renault Pulse and Volkswagen Polo. However, the industry experts consider the Hyundai i20 as one of Sail UVA’s biggest competitors in the country’s car market, where both of these cars will be competing with to woo the young premium hatchbacks buyers. Here we will be taking a closer look at the major competition points of these two cars.

First of all, when compared through the engine and specification part, Hyundai i20 appears to be a much better option in diesel version with a much powerful 1.4 Lit CRDi diesel powertrain that generates a peak power of 90 bhp along with a peak torque of 22.4 kgm. In comparison, the Chevrolet Sail diesel generates a maximum power and torque combination of mere 78 bhp and 214 Nm, which clearly shows the supremacy of i20 diesel engine. However, if you are a petrol car enthusiast, there is not much difference in the performance of these two cars. While the i20 petrol’s 1.2L VTVT Kappa Engine delivers a peak power and torque combination of 84 bhp and 11.6 kgm, the new Sail U-VA 1.2 L Smart-tech petrol version generates a peak power of 85 bhp along with a combination of 113 Nm of peak torque. Also, when it comes to choice, i20 has a much wider range of options including an auto transmission version.

Performance wise, Hyundai i20 can be considered a better option, but it lags behind in mileage in diesel version. The Sail U-VA diesel version delivers a mileage of 22.1 km per liter in comparison to i20 diesel’s 21.9 km per liter. However, in the petrol version, the i20 is slightly more fuel efficient at 18.5 km per liter in comparison to the Sail U-VA’s 18.2 km per liter. With a higher ground clearance (174 mm for petrol and 168 mm for diesel), the Sail U-VA suits more the Indian road conditions in comparison to much lower i20 at 165 mm.
However, when it comes to price, the Sail U-VA appears to be a quite economical option in both petrol and diesel versions. The base petrol and diesel versions of Sail U-VA are available at Rs 4.44 lakh and 5.87 lakh (LS petrol and diesel), in comparison to Hyundai i20 base petrol’s and diesel’s price tags of Rs 4.75 and Rs 6.01 lakh (Era 1.2 petrol and Era 1.4 CRDI), respectively. On the other hand, the top petrol and top diesel variants of Sail U-VA (LT petrol and diesel) at Rs 5.70 lakh and Rs 6.62 lakh, respectively. In comparison, the top end i20 petrol and diesel are available at Rs 6.76 lakh and Rs 7.57 lakh (Asta optional with Sunroof and Asta 1.4 CRDI), respectively. All prices are in ex-showroom Delhi.

Now coming to the exterior designing of these two cars, it should better be left to the buyers as looks and appearance are totally matters of personal choice. While Hyundai i20 is sportier and aerodynamically more efficient, the Chevrolet Sail UVA exterior is more aggressive and muscular. However, when it comes to exterior dimensions, which plays a major role in making a car spacious and comfortable for customers, the Hyundai i20 is a clear winner. While the length X width X height of the i20 model is 3995 mm X 1710 mm X 1505 mm, the same ration of Sail U-VA is much lesser at 3946 mm X 1690 mm X 1503 mm.
Same goes true with the wheelbase and boot space that are 2525 mm and 295 liters respectively for Hyundai i20, while at the same time just 2465 mm and 248 liter for Sail U-VA. If you are storage conscious in car, the Sail offers you more space under the rear seats that totally makes a huge luggage space of 1134 litre that is far better than the i20’s.Inside, Hyundai i20 is a much better car as compared to U-VA, be it interior space, passenger comfort or interior designing. However, new Sail U-VA’s smart back seat wide opening door, dual tone and improved plastics make U-VA a good option in its segment. However, i20 is a clear winner when considered in terms of head room, lag room and shoulder room.

Coming to the comparison of major features of both of these cars, we will be comparing the standard features first and then the premium features. The base variant of i20 Era is loaded with a range of premium features including AC, electronic power steering, power front windows, centre lock, clutch lock, engine immobilizer, battery saver etc. On the other hand, base Chevrolet U-VA is much lesser equipped and there are no features like central locking and clutch lock etc.
Overall, when we take into consideration the all segments, the Hyundai i20 appears a better option. However, if you are a price, mileage and storage space conscious buyer, Sail U-VA is clearly a better car to purchase.
