Diesel cars may take over petrol variants

Since the petrol prices are soaring high, the demand of diesel car has increased in India. The latest car sales figures shows, in April the sale of Maruti Swift diesel has gone up while Maruti Alto’s sales figures decreased. Being cheaper than the other models of Maruti, Alto was the first choice of the car enthusiasts. But, now Swift has taken over its place as it is a diesel car, while Alto is a petrol car. It’s a big lose for Alto, which retained the top slot for over seven years.

After Maruti 800, it was Maruti Alto which ruled the Indian car market. The reason for losing its top slot is that it does not have the diesel option and since the petrol prices have increased people are more careful of buying a car, which may be expensive but should be a diesel car. Media reports suggest that in April 19,484 units of Swift and 17,842 units of Alto have been sold.

But, auto car market experts believed that the Alto would regain its top slot quickly. Now, as the petrol prices have increased by around Rs 7.50/litre, it increased the gap in petrol and diesel prices further that is over Rs 30/litre. It is most likely that the diesel cars would become the first choice of the people. Now, there are chances that cars like Maruti Ritz and Swift would rule the market with diesel options, sources said. Just like Alto, it would be tough for Hyundai Eon, a recently launched Hyundai car, to sustain in the market because it does not have a diesel option.

Besides, the brands like Toyota, General Motors, Ford, Volkswagen and Tata Motors, which have diesel cars, will get benefits of growing preference of diesel cars. Also, to cash in on the growing trend, the Tata Motors is planning to launch its Tata Nano diesel car by the end of this fiscal year. The industry sources said that the car would be made available in the market at Rs 3 lakh. At present 8000 units of Nano car are being sold but it is expected the sale the car would be doubled after the launch of its diesel version.

It's obvious that because of hike in petrol prices most of the people will prefer diesel cars or some may drop the idea of buying a car. And according to my kind of person, I will prefer the most fuel efficient car in petrol as looking doesn't matter a lot for me.
