General Motors plans to phase out Aveo and Optra
General Motors India is planning to phase out Chevrolet Aveo and Chevrolet Optra as indicated by the top officials of the company at the launch of New Chevrolet Cruze yesterday. The old models of Aveo and Optra would be replaced by new models, including Chevrolet Sail. The General Motors will launch Sail in hatchback as well as in Sedan versions to replace the Chevrolet Aveo U-VA hatchback and Aveo Sedan. Just like Aveo, Optra would be phased out as it is ageing. The company is planning to phase out Optra too even though there is demand of the car in some parts of the country, which is why, the company is taking time in taking a call on it. The company has not revealed that when the process of phasing out Optra would be started and which new car would replace it in the market.

To tap the increasing demand of the diesel cars in the Indian market, the General Motors has decided to launch diesel variant of its premium sedan Cruze. It would be made available in the range of Rs 13.85 lakh to Rs 15.67 lakh (ex showroom Delhi). Since the auto industry has been passing through a rough patch due to economic slowdown, the General Motors has decided to regulate production to prevent inventory pile up by introducing no production days (NPDs). With the efforts, the company is trying to produce vehicles as per the demand. The company has decided to introduce one NPD each week.

But, General Motors expects that in the festive season demand of vehicles would pick up again. It has planned new car launches for the festive season. Chevrolet Enjoy is one of the multipurpose vehicles which would be launched in the coming days. May be by the end of the year, Enjoy would hit the showrooms in the country. The media reports suggest that General Motors produced 5,986 units which are 24.06% less than the corresponding period last year.
Other car makers too have planed new car launches for 2012 in India. The coming month will also witness launches of some of the cars which include, Renault Duster SUV which would be the first car to be launched in the month of July. The SUV would go on sale effective July 4th, 2012. Earlier it was reported that Duster would be launched during the festive season around September or October, but the company advanced Duster’s launch to July. Let us hope that the SUV lives up to the company’s expectations.
