Honda City comes back to top

Sometime ago, when the largest European car manufacturer Volkswagen launched its mid-sized sedan Vento it instantly became a hit. Ten the Korean comapny Hyundai launched a new version of Verna, which was named Verna Fluidic. Verna Fluidic too has been a hit in the Indian market. Volkswagen Vento achieved the almost impossible seeming task of dethroning Honda City from being the top mid-sized sedan in Indian market. But now the real top seller is said to be back on the top after nearly six months. Honda City has again picked up and become the top selling mid-sized sedan of India. It has forced Hyundai Verna Fluidic and the Volkswagen Vento down to second and third positions.

Honda Motors sold 5,819 units of City during the last month. Whereas, 4,211 units of Hyundai Verna Fluidic were sold during the same period. Volkswagen sold 3,019 Vento sedans in the last month. It was in March of this year that Volkswagen ended Honda City’s reign as the highest selling mid-sized sedan. Volkswagen sold 3,973 units of Vento in that month, whereas Honda managed to sell just 2,773 of City. But recently, Honda cut the prices of its cars Honda City and Honda Jazz by Rs. 66,000 and Rs. 160,000 respectively. this has helped Honda to bring back Honda City to top. Honda City accountes for 40 percent of the total sales in its segment.

Jnaneswar Sen, Honda's Senior Vice President in Marketing and Sales Department, said that the company was struggling to import raw material, after the earthquake struck Japan.However, things are now normalising. According to him, the company is now working on localising the components, which would, in turn, help reduce costs and thus the prices of its cars. Honda is soon launching its new small car in India that would be called Honda Brio.
