Volkswagen to build Tantus as its budget brand for emerging markets
The budget car segment in emerging markets such as India has greatly lured even the most established players across the world. Nissan is coming up with Datsun and Renault could think of Dacia and now it is known that Volkswagen will be coming up with Tantus. It will be the budget car brand and it will target the low cost car segment in emerging markets such as India. It is now believed that soon, by 2014 or by 2016 hopefully these low cost car brands will be launching in India and then car buyers will have ample choices in the budget car segment as well.

Now that Volkswagen has decided to plunge into the low cost car segment in order to realize its dream of achieving the targeted sales it has set for the coming years, one will see a lot of car offering from the Tantus in the near future. These new products will include sedan, wagon, MPV, crossover and most importantly a three door hatchback. Except the entry level car, all these new VW cars will be in the range of Rs 6 lakh to Rs 8 lakh. The hatchback is expected to be priced around Rs 2-4 lakh. Some critics are of the opinion that the Tantus will be nothing but the recycling of the old generation of the exiting VW Polo, VW Vento and other VW cars.

Meanwhile, reports also suggest that VW will not compromise with safety in keeping the price of these cars down. It is believed that these budget cars will at least have the standard safety features installed. Thus in a way VW will keep its promise of offering cars having luxury and safety as the primary feature. It is also highly anticipated that in order to keep the cost down, these VW Tantus cars will be using the Volkswagen Polo and Volkswagen Vento engines under their hood as well and as these cars will be much lighter, these engines are expected to be highly performing and mileage driven on the Tantus cars.
