General Motors Talegaon plant achieves milestone
GM India created a milestone by rolling out its 100,000th engine on 13 December 2012 from its Talegaon manufacturing unit. It is definitely a proud moment for the company as it showcases the growth and high demand for its cars like Chevrolet Cruze and Chevrolet Beat and the latest addition in the portfolio, Chevrolet Sail UVA.

The Talegaon facility of General Motors India is its first powertrain plant across the world, which produces both diesel and petrol engine concurrently. This plant became operation in November 2010 and about $230 million invested. In the starting, the plant has a capacity to churn out 160,000 engines per year and was designed to house expansion in future. In just two years, the manufacturing unit crossed the 100,000 engine mark, simultaneously maintaining its efficiency and quality standards.
Right now, the Talegaon unit manufactures the 1.3 and 1.0 litre TCDi diesel engine along with petrol engines in 1.2 and 1.0 litres capacities. To adjust the high demand of its cars, this plant has been designed and developed to increase its production capacity to 140,000 engines more every year; of course it will depend on the requirement as the car maker is already ready with two more products, Chevrolet Sail notchback and Chevrolet Enjoy MPV. These two cars will be officially launched in 2013.
Both these cars will be facing a tough competition in the Indian car bazaar. Chevrolet Sail notchback will get a hard-hitting fight from Maruti Swift Dzire, Toyota Etios, Tata Manza and Mahindra Verito. On the other hand, Chevrolet Enjoy MPV would be competing with cars like Maruti Ertiga, Mahindra Quanto, and Nissan Evalia and yet to be launched Ford EcoSport. On the whole, it looks like General Motors India have busy 2013.
