There were spy shots, there were anticipations but nothing came out and Mitsubishi too remained tight lipped on the matter. In India, the Pajero is sold as Montero as well. Montero being the third generation car of Pajero family. The regular Pajero sold in India dates back to 1991 and is now quite old to be replaced by a new one. The Pajero Sport SUV that is upcoming car in India is Indian name for Mitsubishi Challenger. Thus with the Pajero Sport launch in India, there will be two Pajero models, in fact three as the Montero is also the third generation Pajero.

The new SUV from Mitsubishi stable in India is expected to sport a 2.5L 140 PS diesel engine which currently power the international edition of Mitsubishi Challenger. In order to remove the tag of being a fuel guzzler, Mitsubishi has greatly fine tuned the engine to be fuel efficient as well. Besides, if it is to be meant for India, it has to deliver a decent mileage irrespective of anything else. A seven seater version is in the offing and will be equipped with ABS and EBD besides cruise control and air bags. Mitsubishi plans to launch its new SUV in India as completely built up unit in India, but if there is a greater demand of the car in the country, the SUV can be brought to India as completely knocked down unit and assembled here.
