Strike in Maruti extends to other automobile plants
The ongoing strike at Maruti Suzuki’s plant in the Manesar plant of Haryana does not seem to be coming to any elucidation. It has been 12 days since it is underway. The strike is swiftly spreading to other automobile plants, as their unions are deciding to go on a hunger strike on 17th June and halting the production of cars for two hours on 20th June.
Anil Kumar,general secretary of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) declared to IANS that if their demands of recalling 11 of its sacked employees and generating of a separate union are not met, they will be observing a fast on 17th June and will bring to a standstill the ongoing production of the cars for 2 hours on 20th June.
Anil Kumar also warned the management of the Company that the workers will positively show for work but will scrutinize the fast and close down production for 2 hours and they will do so in collaboration with the unions of Gurgaon, Rewari and Daruhera.
He further added that all the union workers have sanctioned to do so. Over 20,000 workers will be participating in this demonstration.
Many major automobile companies like Hero Honda and Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India have their manufacturing plants in these sites of Haryana. Even original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and component industry are situated here.
The union workers have taken such a big pronouncement after the announcement of the management at Maruti that they are ready to mull over a new union at Manesar plant as against that it is not to be allied to any exterior source of workers.
A senior official of Maruti told IANS that a positive symposium is going on with the union workers and tenacity can be seen in the coming hours.
The official said that there was a loss of 11,400 cars due to the prevailing strike at the Manesar plant and on the day 1 itself, on 4th June, of the strike, a loss of 600 units was catalogued.
The distress of this strike came upon Swift, Swift Dzire, A-Star and SX4.These are Maruti’s blockbuster tailgates and sedans which are produced at the Manesar plant. The mainstream of the automobile giant's production is done at its remaining three plants in Gurgaon, the satellite of the national capital.
The total loss is dowelled at around Rs.340 crore.
The official alleged that the company is looking for a swift resolution as to bring an instantaneous conclusion to the strike and to appease its workers at the Manesar plant, so that the work can be resumed presently.
Maruti Suzuki envelops the largest hunk of Indian Domestic market. During fiscal 2010-11, its recorded sale was 12, 71,005 vehicles and the export were 138,266 units.
Some of the popular hatchback models in the Indian auto market are Ford Figo, Maruti Swift, Hyundai i10, Chevrolet Beat and Volkswagen Polo. Apart from these popular models, cars going to hit the Indian roads this year are Toyota Etios Liva, Maruti Cervo and New Ford Fiesta.
