Diesel cars no more pocket friendly in the Indian capital

If you are planning to purchase a diesel variant of a car, then you are advised to re-think on your decision, as from Thursday onwards the Government of Delhi plans a 25% hike on the registration fee of such automobiles.

An increase of at least Rs 6,000 in the registration fee for the low cost diesel car is expected whereas for the top class luxury cars and heavy commercial vehicles the increase may fall in the bracket of Rs 20,000 – 30,000, as stated by the Officials.

On an average, there are approximately 350 to 450 diesel cars getting registered out of 1200 - 1400 vehicles registered in the Indian capital daily.

While introducing the annual budget in the month of March, the Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit had planned to levy further tax on all diesel run automobiles as specified under Motor Vehicle Taxation Act 2004.

According to the officials diesel vehicles from now onwards will be paying 5% of the total cost as the registration fee as compared to the earlier fee of 4%. The diesel vehicles currently paying 7% tax will now be paying 8.75% as the registration fee. The top class luxury cars which were attracting 10% registration fee till now will have to pay 12.5%.

The Chief Minister blamed the environmental anxieties for the increase in the registration fee. As per Sheila Dixit, the hike was done with an intention to dishearten the consumers buying such vehicles.

In the current auto market many diesel cars are available such as Chevrolet Beat, Maruti Suzuki Swift, and recently launched Toyota Etios sedan and Liva hatchback.
