Maruti Suzuki’s strike at Manesar unit ends; all workers reinstated, 30 still in suspension
Today the 21st of October marks the end of 14 day long deadlock at Maruti Suzuki India’s (MSI) Manesar based manufacturing unit. The conclusion came in after a three party agreement was signed; these included MSI administration, workforce and Haryana state government. As per the agreement MSI will now restore its 64 permanent employees along with 1200 casual workers, the remaining 30 employees will stay suspended. The agreement emerged after many rounds of discussions since 19th October which were witnessed by the top representatives of the Haryana government.
MSI spokesperson said that as per the agreement 64 employees were taken back as the charges against them were not that serious. Some severe charges were found against the rest 30 workers who will remain under suspension, he added.
The 1200 casual employees were restored by the Maruti management sighting the backlog of work during the strike at Manesar factory.
The agreement stated that in order avoid such incidents happening in future a ‘Grievance Reformation Committee’ will be formed comprising representatives from workforce and management.
It all started when the workers at MSI were asked to sign the ‘good conduct bond’ on October 1st to end the 33 day long strike, after which the workers on 7th October again went on strike; which was the violation of good conduct bond signed, demanding the re-induction of 1200 casual employees and 44 permanent employees along with 50 co-workers who were suspended or send away for not respecting the bond.
Labours at Suzuki subsidiaries Suzuki Power-train India Limited (SPIL) and Suzuki Motorcycle India Private Limited (SMIPL) who were observing strike in support of their Manesar colleagues has also called off the standoff.
Now the production will begin in full force of the models such as A-Star, Wagon R, SX4 sedan and the in demand Swift.
