Mercedes Benz A Class based SUV to take on Q3 and X1

Mercedes Benz will be building a compact crossover based on Mercedes Benz A Class sports hatchback. The new compact SUV will be the Mercedes answer to Audi Q3 and BMW X1 that are currently stealing the show in this segment. Besides, it will also be competing with Volvo XC40 as well. Mercedes was at the number one position after BMW took over and Audi again took over the second pedestal. Now Mercedes car stand at the third most popular luxury car maker in India. Notably, the 2013 A Class hatchback is already in the making and India still awaits the launch of this car.

The new compact crossover is expected to be named as Mercedes Benz GLA crossover and it will be production ready in the next three years. To be available in petrol and diesel engine options, the A Class based Mercedes SUV is expected to be highly fuel efficient and powerful. It is also expected that Mercedes will be making this SUV available in many power options. Also, an all wheel drive version will also be there as the high end trim while the entry level SUV will be front wheel powered. Like the A Class, it will be based on the MFA platform that has proved to be a boon to this German automobile maker.

Notably, compact SUVs segment that was new to India has been explored by Renault Duster in the entry level segment and it is expected that the A Class based SUV will take care of the premium compact SUV segment. However, the early entrants such as the Q3 and the already hit X1 will be strengthening their positions to newer levels till the Mercedes SUV arrives. It is expected that the Mercedes A Class based SUV will be an instant hit following its low price and segment first features.
